Rerouting means moving part of an existing gas system to a new path, for example to relocate a range in a new kitchen layout, clear the way for an addition or pool, or retire a line that runs somewhere it should not. Upsizing means replacing undersized pipe with larger pipe so the system can carry its full load. Both start with a load calculation for every appliance on the system, because changing one branch can affect the trunk line it feeds from. The new piping is pressure tested and inspected before service is restored.

Two situations bring most homeowners to this service. The first is a remodel: an island range where the old range sat against a wall, a wall coming out where a gas line runs, or a garage conversion that puts a line in the middle of a new room. The second is added load. A home plumbed decades ago for a tank water heater, a furnace and a range may now be asked to feed a tankless water heater, a gas dryer and a patio kitchen too. When the total demand exceeds what the pipe can carry, appliances at the far end of the system run short of gas.

We start by totaling the BTU demand of every appliance and measuring the longest run, then size each section to match. Upsizing often means replacing pipe from the appliance back toward the meter rather than only the last few feet. Old branches that are no longer used are removed or properly capped by us, never left live behind a wall. Lines that need to move through a yard may have to cross caliche, the hard, abrasive hardpan found across the valley, which slows digging and is reflected in the written price.

The actual figure depends on how much pipe is replaced, how far back toward the meter upsizing has to go, how many walls, ceilings or slabs the route crosses, and whether outdoor sections run through caliche.
