The pipe behind your walls depends largely on when your home was built. Pre-1960s houses in the historic core often have galvanized steel supply lines and cast iron drains. Many tracts from the 1970s through the early 1990s were plumbed with polybutylene, Kitec fittings show up in some later 1990s and 2000s homes, copper is widespread across the middle decades, and PEX dominates newer construction. Polybutylene is usually gray, flexible plastic, often marked PB, and was used in many valley tracts from the 1970s through the early 1990s. Galvanized steel is dull gray threaded metal, common in pre-1960s homes. Check where pipes enter the water heater or come out of the wall under sinks.
