About 90 percent of the valley's water comes from Lake Mead. The Southern Nevada Water Authority treats it with ozone, filters it and adds chlorine, and it meets federal standards. It is also very hard, at about 280 parts per million, roughly 16 grains per gallon, which leaves scale on fixtures, inside water heaters and on dishwasher and washer screens.

Testing is a sensible step in homes plumbed before 1986, when lead solder was banned for drinking water plumbing. The EPA action levels of 15 ppb for lead and 1.3 ppm for copper apply to public water systems, not to homeowners, and the EPA health goal for lead is zero.
